My Approach to Counseling & Coaching People with ADD/ADHD
Counseling /Coaching Philosophy
While people with ADD or ADHD have many concerns in common, as an ADD therapist and coach, I treat each person as being unique. In spite of the problems you may have as the result of having ADD, I know you also have many strengths, some of them precisely the direct result of having ADD. For example, people with ADD tend to be out of the box thinkers, often make great entrepreneurs, and are very creative.
My goal as an ADD/ADHD counselor and coach is to help you, as a person with ADD, discover how to thrive. I’ll help you see where your specific talents are and develop a plan to get you to where you want to be. My belief is that any person with ADD can excel in the world. I’ve seen many of my clients soar in their life once they figured out how to transform what appeared to be “deficits”, into strengths.
What to Expect from Counseling /Coaching
If you have not been assessed for ADD, I’ll first provide an ADD/ADHD assessment so that we know with more certainty if you have ADD. Once an ADD diagnosis has been ascertained, we’ll proceed with ADD coaching or counseling.
My counseling style with people who have ADD is gentle and supportive, yet challenging when needed. I’ll help you get to the root of the issue quickly, as I want you to get your money’s worth by seeing fast results.
We’ll begin by discussing what has brought you into therapy or coaching. I’ll help you clarify what you really want in your life. You’ll be encouraged to dream big about your goals in a way you might not have for a long time.
Once we get clear on what you want, we’ll look at the obstacles that are preventing you from getting that. For instance, many people with ADD have a damaged sense of self-worth because of how negatively people have reacted towards them.
Throughout your life you may have been told (or felt) that you were “stupid,” lazy,” or just “not good enough.” We’ll I am going to tell you right now that none of this is true. To the contrary, through ADD counseling and coaching I’ll show you just how smart, creative and motivated you can be.
I’ll help you see that while you may have unique differences in some ways to many people, you can use and develop these unique differences to perfect your special gifts. ADD counseling or coaching will help you transform any negative concept of yourself into a more positive one.
The length of therapy or coaching will depend on your goals. Even after 19 years as a therapist, I am often amazed at how quickly people respond and shift their behaviors after only 1 or 2 sessions. However, the average person generally chooses to work with me consistently over a period of 4 to 6 months fine-tuning their goals and outcomes. We’ll assess how the therapy is going for you on an ongoing basis, and depending on the results you achieve, you can decide how long you wish to continue with counseling or coaching sessions.
A New Belief System Leading to a New Way of Being
I work with a variety counseling and coaching modalities that access your conscious and subconscious mind including cognitive behavioral therapy, music, breath work, guided meditation, Neuro -Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnosis. Since your problems largely stem from the limiting “beliefs” you have about yourself, and these beliefs were “programmed” into your unconscious at an early age, the fastest way for you to achieve the results you want, is to change that belief system.
The ADD coaching and counseling tools I use are designed to quickly get at the root of your ideas, thoughts and mental pictures that are negatively impacting your ability to create and step into the life you want and deserve. We’ll work on shifting those self-limiting thoughts and beliefs so that you have a stronger, more confident sense of self. Once this happens, taking the next step into the life you want will feel natural and easy.
When you have developed clarity and a vision about what your goals are, and are ready and willing to take the next step in achieving them, I can assist you in the role of guide or coach, in making that happen as quickly as possible. Here is where we will focus and collaborate on strategies that will develop a structure for goal achievement. This might consist of strengthening skills such as organization, initiation, persistence and follow through, prioritizing, as well as time management. Coaching or counseling holds you accountable so that you continuously come back to your goals, adjusting the way you approach any obstacles in order to achieve the outcome you envision.
